In this lively and engaging workshop, participants will sew their own beaded art piece on canvas, while singing, chanting, and beading to music. Chief Shaka Zulu will guide participants through the process of creating their own unique patch that they can take home.

Proceeds from this workshop will support The Better Family Life Feather Fund.

The Feather Fund, spearheaded by Big Chief Shaka Zulu, raises important funds needed for Masking Indians to purchase the iconic feathers that are a crucial design component of each unique suit. The fund prioritizes elders, children and those experiencing financial hardship. The high cost of feathers for this cherished tradition makes this fund essential for preserving the cultural heritage of the New Orleans Indigenous Masking Societies.

Your participation will help ensure these artisans continue to thrive; enriching our community with their history, art, and spirit. Together we can ensure that this vital New Orleans tradition not only survives but flourishes for generations to come.

The deadline to purchase a ticket to the workshop is Monday, October 7, 2024.

Purchase your spot before Monday, September 30, 2024 and you will automatically be entered in a drawing for a chance to win one of four $50 gift cards to MONDAY restaurant. (See details below).

His suit-making talent was honed under the guidance of Chief Darryl Montana, and he now leads the Golden Feather Hunters, a Black Masking group he established in 2018. Shaka's suits have been exhibited globally, and he has lectured and led workshops on New Orleans' Black Masking, drumming, and stilt dancing traditions, continuing to share his knowledge both locally and internationally.
